Did Black Friday and Cyber Monday Break the Bank?

____________________________________________________________________________________________

With the sluggish economy, many families are looking for ways to save money this holiday season. Bombarded with advertisements and catalogs, the temptation is strong for many people to spend beyond their means.

Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, consumers can still take several steps to save money this holiday season and far beyond:

Cash — resist the temptation to use credit cards to pay for holiday gifts and treats. Spending cash will give consumers the impetus to make hard choices and purchase lower-cost gifts.

Lower utility bills — The average American family now spends almost $400 a month on utilities. WhiteFence, the nation’s leading site to compare and order home services such as home phone, broadband, television, electricity, and natural gas, can help consumers easily comparison shop for better rates and deals, putting more money in consumers’ pockets at the end of the month.

Gift-giving — maybe consumers have traditionally purchased gifts for every single member of their extended family, but traditions can change. If consumers are looking for ways to save money, they can suggest that family members only purchase gifts for the youngest children in the family. Or, they could suggest a new gift-giving tradition — drawing names and purchasing a gift for one family member vs. every family member.

Get creative — Handmade gifts, or even food, can make great gifts. Consumers can exercise their creativity and create or cook a wonderful gift — saving money in the process.

Comparison shopping and group-buying online — many online retailers offer free shipping and steep discounts during the holiday season. Popular group-buying sites like BuyWithMe give consumers a handful of unique gifts to choose from at discounts of up to 50 percent. No shipping or handling fees necessary. Consumers can easily shop for the best gifts and prices online and save money.
